What's on top?

It's been a big year for the tCA team. During 2014, we launched a major new training program and a new website. The Community Organising Fellowship provided a comprehensive 22-day training program for coal, gas and renewable energy campaigners. And our new website provides access to thousands of resources to support powerful campaigns for social and environmental justice.

The new year looks exciting. We've recruited the 2015 Comm Org cohort and will be working closely with several non-government groups around the country to provide other modes of community organiser education and training including workshops, retreats and resources. Early in the year, we'll be launching the first instalment of our People Power manual, a collection of resources for campaign strategists. Watch this space for details.

This year has seen a surge of interest in community organising in Australia. Several leading social change groups are re-orienting their campaign strategies, developing new skills and redefining roles. During 2015, we're committed to deepening this discussion by sharing resources that differentiate between field, online and electoral organising, Alinsky-style organising and other approaches. A precise language to describe campaign approaches and tactics helps articulate assumptions about forms of power, roles and relationships.

Seasons greetings and warm wishes to our supporters and subscribers. Drop us a line anytime to share resources and details of activist learning opportunities.

The New Bottom Line: Building Alignment and Scale to Confront the Economic Crisis

The New Bottom Line: Building Alignment and Scale to Confront the Economic Crisis

The New Bottom Line effort was a daring experiment that grew out of a moment of crisis and a shared understanding that organizing in traditional modes as disparate networks would not be enough to win against the banks that had crashed the economy. The four organizing networks that formed NBL came together on their own initiative. They launched campaigns that opened up important space to consider …

“We want democracy, but we don’t have the theory or skill to do it”

“We want democracy, but we don’t have the theory or skill to do it”

A lot of traditional organizing skills have just been forgotten. It’s interesting to think of how we got to where we are and see similar mistakes being made over and over and over.  If you go back to the 1930s and 1940s, organizers were … organized. There were structures and titles and tasks. And hierarchies. And dues that people paid. A lot of …

Do more with an agenda review | Daniel Hunter

Agenda reviews don't need to be one-way activities.  It can be really useful to stop frequently and invite questions and reflections... I’m amazed at how few facilitators bring levity to the agenda review.  It's a great time to model the kind of workshop space you expect this to be.  Is it an exciting workshop?  A place for jokes?  A place for people …
