What's on top?

If this is your first Change Agency enews, welcome! This free monthly update goes to more than 5000 activist-educators, campaigners and facilitators, sharing links, resources and events.

Applications for the 2018 Community Organising Fellowship are due at the end of September.

The Fellowship is Australia's most intensive training for campaign strategists, activists and organisers. It includes three residential workshops (a total of 17 days) spread over 6 months, a structured and experiential curriculum, mentoring program and skillshares with lead campaigners from around the country.

Since 2014, 100 campaigners have graduated. As part of a national network, they now occupy lead roles in many of the country's most dynamic campaigns, building people power for social and environmental justice.

We especially welcome applications from folks campaigning in communities that are directly impacted by coal, gas and climate change, organisers in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Tasmania, Aboriginal campaigners, people of colour and LGPTQI activists. Fees are negotiated on a sliding scale, with full and partial scholarships available to ensure that cost is not a barrier.

What do people say about the Fellowship?

I have been pushed outside convenient and comfortable thought patterns and have been exposed to a rich variety of community organisers and their practices. As a result, I am thinking more about the relationships in communities I work in, and how to deepen and strengthen them in order to challenge existing power structures and create the change we seek. Harriet Leadbetter, Vic Trades Hall Council

Beyond Command-and-Control Campaigns (NetChange)

While the directed-network campaigning model delegates the management of some important activities to its base, central leadership typically owns certain things like issue framing and storytelling that are critical to campaign success. Rapidly self-propagating protest actions like Occupy Wall Street, for example, have demonstrated that a compelling approach to a shared social pain-point can give a movement a life of …
