What's on top?

Happy new year! If you've had a break over summer, here's hoping your 're-entry' into your community campaigning is gentle! If you've just subscribed, welcome! Our monthly enews is just one way we share resources and opportunities to strengthen campaigns for social and environmental justice. Be sure to also check out the Change Agency's Build your own campaigners' toolkit. Just select one or more topics (from the  85 listed) then hit 'search'. Narrow your search by adding topics (such as our 'favourites' tag).

In this month's enews, we're pleased to share a terrific piece by Joel Dignam that draws parallels between the strategies adopted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the current 'Stop Adani' campaign against a proposed mega-mine in Australia. Thanks for sharing these observations, Joel!

This month's calendar of learning opportunities includes a link to the online course in civil resistance offered through the International Centre for Nonviolent Conflict. We can't recommend this course highly enough. It's a participant-led course that includes readings, tasks and online dialogue.

Happy times ;)

Theorymaker: Tools to visualise your theory of change

Theory Maker is a free web app by Steve Powell for making any kind of causal diagram, i.e. a diagram which uses arrows to say what contributes to what. You make the diagrams just by typing the names of the elements (called variables) in a structured way into a (resizeable) window, and you get a live diagram as output which reflects what you type. …

A theory of change that made the impossible possible

Of all the hot campaign trends from the past few years, the one that’s probably most commonly implemented on new campaigns is the “theory of change”. And it’s a …

Violence Will Only Hurt the Trump Resistance

Erica Chenowith writes: "black bloc tactics often hurt the causes that these activists claim to be fighting for. While violent flanks have sometimes produced short-term tactical advantages, they often come with painful long-term costs for movements seeking change—and the communities they purport to represent. The historical evidence in support of this conclusion is worth considering as the Trump resistance builds. "Studies show that …
