What's on top?

Black lives matter. The police killing of George Floyd has catalysed global protest about racial injustice. Here in Australia, protests are highlighting the more than 400 Aboriginal deaths in custody since 1991 when a Royal Commission recommended sweeping policy changes to break the cycle of Aboriginal imprisonment.

Our team stands with our Black, Indigenous and People of Colour colleagues, friends and loved ones. In this dynamic moment, we re-double our commitment to racial justice. We stand with people whose lives are most directly impacted by brutality, incarceration and other manifestations of racial injustice. We are mindful of the responsibility that comes with privilege and commit to accountability as we dismantle systems of oppression.

You'll find details of the rallies being held this Saturday right around Australia here and elsewhere.

This year has tested everyone's online organising skills and savvy. Social distancing measures have forced campaigners to rely on social media and digital communication more than ever, so training and support have become paramount. Our team have been especially impressed by the Social Movement Technologies Digital Campaigning Certificate. Their 9-month course provides access to online sessions that cover 30 topics. As a participant, you can pick and choose topics, tailoring your time commitment to fit your needs and circumstances. It's an extensive and flexible course. SMT are now recruiting an Australia-Pacific cohort for this year's Digital Campaigning Certificate, kicking off in September. They are offering a two-thirds discount on enrolment fees and the option of monthly discussion sessions for this regional cohort. Read more below.

Our Community Organising Fellowship continues to adapt to the constraints and opportunities of this strange time. Our cohort and team come together each fortnight for workshops, guest speakers and campaign clinics. Alternate Thursdays are for cohort-led discussions about current and emerging campaign dynamics and challenges. Each month, folks connect with their mentors and have relational meetings with each other and with community leaders. The cohort continue to impress us with their resilience and creativity. Read more about the Fellowship below, where we share the latest update prepared for the donors and grant-makers who make it all possible. Applications for the 2021 Fellowship open 1 August.

Wishing you all impact in your work for social and environmental justice.

Coalitions of the willing [blog]

Amanda Tattersall explores how community organisations and unions can work together: "Coalitions between unions and community organisations can be a powerful means for achieving social change and reinvigorating civil society. But not all coalitions are made equal. There are strategies that are likely to lead to more successful coalition practice. "While many coalitions come together to resist particular policy changes, …
