Often our assumptions about how change is likely to be brought about are unstated. Without a map to guide our actions as we work to address a problem as urgent, universal and overwhelming as climate change, it’s possible that any path of action can seem either attractive or futile. In May 2009, we invited climate activists to help us develop an exercise to:
inspire positive future thinking
shift to outcomes rather than tactics focus
outline some threads in the campaign’s stages
help campaigners identify short to medium term objectives
encourage participants to reflect on and articulate their theories of change
The result is an interactive process for climate change activists and action groups. The exercise challenges participants to identify a sequence of outcomes they expect will be required to avoid catastrophic climate change. The resource material includes more than 70 possible outcomes and detailed instructions for facilitators.
Download the exercise below. We’d love to hear from you: How did you use the exercise? What was the result? How can the process guide be built on and improved?
