Community organising action research

The Community Organising action research project was modeled on our Strategising for Change action research project.

From late 2003, the Change Agency (tCA) developed a growing suite of tools for activists and community organisers to develop effective campaign strategy. The project initially involved a close relationship with Training for Change in Philadelphia who generously shared and exchanged resources and ideas. Since 2003, we have introduced more than 1000 community organisers in campaign strategising skills and processes and shared almost thirty different strategising resources through our website. These ideas, skills and resources have been taken up in practical ways by community groups around the country to guide their work for social change. Since the beginning of the project, when campaign strategy was a frequently misunderstood and avoided craft, strategising tools including critical-path analysis, forcefield analysis and power mapping have become widely-known and commonly practiced tools.

The project is based on an action research cycle:

reflection

This phase involves the Change Agency researching and collecting resources: Case studies of effective organising mobilisation and networking, training tools and resources, links to other organisations that offer these kinds of resources. This part of the project involved web-based research, targeted contact and informal interviews, an invitation to our mail list to contribute ideas for the project, and Sam’s 2008 research in other parts of the world.

planning

The project has involved: (i) developing partnerships with organisations who share our interest in community organising; and (ii) curriculum and resource development.

As with the Strategy Project, we’re keen to work closely with other training organisations that have developed training resources and gained experience facilitating workshops on the proposed topics. Working this way with Training for Change allowed us to learn from their experience, adapt training resources they’d developed and trialled, and benefit from the mentoring of experienced activist educators. We plan to partner with interested NGO who will participate in each stage of the cycle.

action

In late 2007, we led our first community organising workshop in Perth. Since then, we’ve been engaged to lead workshops throughout Australia, in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and in other locations. Each workshop provides another opportunity to trial new curriculum, learn what works and revise our ideas and resources.

… Reflection
We will be evaluating the project throughout to inform the next phases of planning and ongoing development.

What are people saying about us?

Most campaigners would probably shudder at the thought of spending ten whole days away from the frantic world of actions and meetings, to invest time in their own reflection and learning. The Community Organising Fellowship forces you to do just that – and what a gift and opportunity that time becomes.

The Fellowship is a unique combination of ingredients. Time for pause and reflection. Discussion with leading thinkers. Connections to a wide array of campaigns. Guidance from experienced and caring facilitators. Bonds formed with 25 inspiring campaigners from across the country.

These ingredients are brought together with carefully crafted methods. Thought-provoking stories. Challenging questions. Developing crucial skills. Applying new methods and tools. Preparing new plans for real world projects.

The result? Ten days that couldn’t have been better spent for someone that is looking to challenge their assumptions, deepen their understanding of why we organise in communities and feel ready to go forward with greater focus and vigour in their work.

Learning the theory and engaging with such practical implementation in such depth will definitely make me a more effective and successful campaigner and organiser. I’m looking forward to practicing my new skills in being more rigorous, thinking more strategically, and communicating more effectively. The strength of the bonds formed within the group has already strengthened the climate movement in Australia.

Workshop sessions are extremely well structured, with small group work, personal reflection time and larger group discussions included throughout. This approach allows all participants to contribute and caters for different learning styles and personalities.

In addition to the formal learning, the personal relationships I have formed with other participants and the facilitators will be extremely important to help me become a more effective and confident campaigner. Without hesitation I would recommend the Fellowship to other campaigners.

I can emphatically endorse the value of this time to build skills and awareness in strategic thinking and in specific and practical community organising tools. I am sure that with concerted application of the course content I will become a significantly more confident and effective organiser. Furthermore, the value of the relationships that have been forged among the cohort offer great potential for future collaboration and support to help build a more coordinated, cooperative and powerful environment movement in Australia.

The Community Organising Fellowship has given me effective organising skills and tools, and background information of the Australian environment and climate movements I need to develop strategy for campaigns, and provide training for other organisers and campaigners across Western Australia. The support I've been given through the ongoing mentorship and buddy program helps me stay connected with the wider movement, and stay on track to organise the people we need to defeat organised money. This program is a transformative experience, changing my work and the movement, and I'm so thankful to be part of it.

I really admired your facilitation skills. I learnt lots watching you guide us through the evening. I'll definitely be using lessons from last night. You're a total pro and I'm really grateful you're generous enough to share your knowledge.

Before coming into this cohort, my community organising ability was – at best – intuitive, with not much structure and theory... or ‘all hat and no horse’ (as the Texans say). This is starting to change. This fellowship has reinvigorated my thirst to become a better campaigner. It has built my skills in strategy and community organising. It has connected me with a mob who are passionate, connected and willing to help out in whatever way they can. Thanks!

We did a two-day workshop with The Change Agency early this year which provided our organisation with some much-needed tools for strategic campaigning and planning. There was nothing but positive feedback from our staff and board members about what they gained from the two days spent with James and Sam. The power mapping exercise was particularly insightful for staff and board members alike and as a result our campaigns are more pro-active - we are seeing results!
