Community organising action research

The Community Organising action research project was modeled on our Strategising for Change action research project.

From late 2003, the Change Agency (tCA) developed a growing suite of tools for activists and community organisers to develop effective campaign strategy. The project initially involved a close relationship with Training for Change in Philadelphia who generously shared and exchanged resources and ideas. Since 2003, we have introduced more than 1000 community organisers in campaign strategising skills and processes and shared almost thirty different strategising resources through our website. These ideas, skills and resources have been taken up in practical ways by community groups around the country to guide their work for social change. Since the beginning of the project, when campaign strategy was a frequently misunderstood and avoided craft, strategising tools including critical-path analysis, forcefield analysis and power mapping have become widely-known and commonly practiced tools.

This phase involves the Change Agency researching and collecting resources: Case studies of effective organising mobilisation and networking, training tools and resources, links to other organisations that offer these kinds of resources. This part of the project involved web-based research, targeted contact and informal interviews, an invitation to our mail list to contribute ideas for the project, and Sam’s 2008 research in other parts of the world.

The project has involved: (i) developing partnerships with organisations who share our interest in community organising; and (ii) curriculum and resource development.

As with the Strategy Project, we’re keen to work closely with other training organisations that have developed training resources and gained experience facilitating workshops on the proposed topics. Working this way with Training for Change allowed us to learn from their experience, adapt training resources they’d developed and trialled, and benefit from the mentoring of experienced activist educators. We plan to partner with interested NGO who will participate in each stage of the cycle.

In late 2007, we led our first community organising workshop in Perth. Since then, we’ve been engaged to lead workshops throughout Australia, in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and in other locations. Each workshop provides another opportunity to trial new curriculum, learn what works and revise our ideas and resources.

What began at Pittwater as a collection of skilled campaigners became a cadre of skilled organizers by the final day at Baden Powell. On Sunday evening as we gathered, I overheard one participant chatting with another at a picnic table and heard, "challenge, choice, outcome" as part of her conversation. Another commented at the final circle at how what had seemed like such a large group at Pittwater now seemed like a much smaller group, reflective of how closely this group had bonded as a team despite their vast differences in geography or organizational size or style, but based on a common goal and identity. Concepts like "building teams" and "building relationships" were part of the normal parlance and just a cursory review of the evaluations to date show an increased appreciation for and attention to leadership development and strategic planning. A number of participants reminded me of my off-the-cuff set of definitions about the differences between mobilizing, campaigning and community organising (focusing on local power), and one told me she has it on the wall of her office to inspire her every day. This has been the successful launch of an ambitious and visionary program. Many thanks to James and Kate for their vision, wisdom, and care in developing and nurturing the curriculum and the cohort. Kudos!

The Community Organising Fellowship has provided a rare opportunity to step off the campaign trail, slow down, and do some deep learning.
